The Sukhoi Su-33 (NATO code: Flanker-D) is a naval fighter aircraft developed by Sukhoi in 1982 for use aboard aircraft carriers. This aircraft is a development of the Su-27 and was previously named Su-27K. The difference between the Su-27 and the Su-33 is that the Su-33 is equipped with aircraft carrier launch and landing equipment (such as rear mounts and folding wings), can be mounted on a canard and can be refueled in the air. In keeping with its mission, it can be considered comparable to the United States F-14 Tomcat, while the MiG-29K 'Fulcrum-D' is comparable to the F/A-18 Hornet.
History
The Sukhoi Su-33 aircraft is an aircraft carrier version of the Su-27 which was originally designed to operate on the main carriers of the Soviet Union. To meet the needs of carrier operations, the SU-33 features a stronger, corrosion-resistant airframe, catch wheels, more powerful engines, and bendable wings for easy onboard storage. The Su-33 is also the first Su-27 variant to use canards to increase maneuverability and reduce take-off distance and landing speed.
The Su-27K, an early design for the Su-33, was originally developed for the Soviet Navy together with the MiG-29K. It is hoped that these two aircraft will be used for aircraft carrier operations. However, the collapse of the Soviet Union left only one aircraft carrier of the Kuznetsov class, so only one aircraft was decided to be developed. Despite being more expensive and larger (thus fewer aircraft would fit on an aircraft carrier), the Soviet Navy opted for the Su-27K. Around 24 aircraft are now known as Su-33 by Sukhoi. Unfortunately, lack of funds meant that the Soviets were no longer using aircraft carriers and these aircraft now operate from nearshore bases. The next development is the two-seater trainer aircraft Su-27KUB or Su-33UB which has a side-by-side seating arrangement like the Su-34. (source: wikipedia)
