The Indonesian Air Force (TNI AU) owned and operated thirty-four A-4E Skyhawk fighter jets as air-to-ground assault/tactical fighter aircraft between 1980 and 2004.

Sixteen of the aircraft were purchased from used aircraft of the Israeli Air Force (Israel Air Force) in 1979. The aircraft consisted of 14 single-seater aircraft of type A-4E and were assigned serial numbers TT-0401 to TT-0414. 2 more double seater of type TA-4H, serial numbers TL-0415 and TL-0416. One type of A-4E aircraft with serial number TT-0417 is a replacement aircraft (because it is still under warranty) from the United States, because the aircraft with serial number TT-0409 crashed at Baucau Air Base, East Timor in 1987. one Squadron, and was placed in the 11th Air Squadron (11th Squadron), Iswahyudi Air Base, Madiun, East Java, Indonesia, before finally being moved to Sultan Hasanuddin Air Base, Makassar, South Sulawesi until the end of its operational period in 2004.

In 1982, Indonesia bought back 16 aircraft used by the Israeli Air Force. The planes are of the A-4E type, which is their excess stock aircraft with a contract value of US$ 27 million. These planes are assigned serial numbers TT-0431 to TT-0446, and are stationed at Air Squadron 12 (Skadud 12), Roesmin Nurjadin Air Base, Pekanbaru, Riau, Indonesia. The planes were incorporated into Squadud 11 from August 25, 1995 to 2004.

Two additional aircraft were purchased in 1999 from the former US Navy type TA-4J. These two aircraft were reconditioned by Safe Air Engineering in Woodbourne, New Zealand and were assigned serial numbers TT-0418 and TT-0419. These two aircraft are stationed at Skadud 11, Makassar.

In Indonesia, this aircraft is better known as "The Hunchback" because of the "hump" on its back which in the original version contained special avionics equipment made for the benefit of the Israeli Air Force.

During its operation in Indonesia, this aircraft had two "belly landings" (landing safely, even without removing the landing gear). The first incident was on January 15, 1987 with the pilot of First Lieutenant Pnb Emir Panji with serial number TT-0414. And another incident on July 20, 1987 with the pilot of First Lieutenant Pnb Agus Supriatna with serial number TT-0408. In addition, there were several incidents with the Skyhawk which resulted in the death of the Indonesian Air Force pilots.

During his service in Indonesia, he supported various military operations. These operations were Operation Sriti Samber and Operation Seroja (1980–1999) in East Timor, Operation Oscar (1991–1992) in Sulawesi and Operation Rencong Terbang (1991–1995) in Aceh.

On August 5, 2004, for the last time this aircraft flew in Indonesia and ended its service. Currently, many Indonesian A-4 Skyhawks are used as monuments in various cities in Indonesia. Two Skyhawk aircraft are in the collection of the Central Air Force Museum Dirgantara Mandala, Yogyakarta (TT-0407) and the Satria Mandala Museum, Jakarta (TT-0438).
