After losing to Thanos in the opening scene of Avengers: Infinity War, the Hulk refuses to help the Avengers fight the Mad Titan throughout the film.
This led fans to suspect that the reason the Hulk was reluctant to fight Thanos was because he was afraid of losing. The screenwriter and director behind Infinity War has revealed that the theory is wrong. Hulk is not afraid, he is angry.
Infinity War screenwriter Christopher Markus said the latest Avengers film was "the beginning of Bruce's troubles" and a continuation of the development of the character of Bruce Banner, the Hulk's alter ego, GameSpot reports.
For the first time since he became the Hulk, Bruce is forced to face the threat on his own. Even when he faced Cull Obsidian, the Hulk refused to help. He had to use his wits to defeat one of the Children of Thanos.
Hulk doesn't want to help Bruce in Infinity War because he's sick of Bruce always hanging on to him whenever he's in trouble. The Hulk didn't want to deal with Bruce's problems all his life.
"What makes Bruce Banner a unique character is that he has a body that is contested by two personalities who hate each other. Both want to gain control of that body," said director Joe Russo. "So their relationship went awry and that's what happened in the movie."
In Thor: Ragnarok, the Hulk is portrayed as an independent character, showing that Bruce and the Hulk are two different people with different needs and desires.
It is still unknown whether Bruce will learn to accept the Hulk as his partner in Avengers 4. One thing is for sure, Bruce will have to start a dialogue with the Hulk if they are to build a healthier relationship.
