The RGM-79 is a fictional weapon from the Gundam series. This Mobile Suit itself has many variants throughout the history of Gundam.

GM (pronounced "Jim" in Japanese), supposedly an acronym for Gundam-Mass-production type, is a mass-produced version of the RX-78-2 Gundam. Although many variants were produced throughout the year, the RGM-79 GM was the first mass-produced mobile suit produced by the Earth Federation. After the end of the One Year War, the GM and its variants became the backbone of the Earth Federation military and were the most durable mobile suits in Universal Century history.

The production model from GM released many of the complex and expensive RX-78 systems, such as the Core Block System and computer learning. The RX-78's Lunar Titanium coating was replaced by cheaper regular Titanium and the Minovsky fusion power plant was downsized. As a consequence, the GM is armed with a beam spray gun that is effective but close at hand compared to the Gundam's powerful beam rifle. GM's standard armament includes a 100mm machine gun or 380mm bazooka, a single beam saber and two 60mm vulcan machine guns overhead. To overcome the shortage in long-range firepower, each GM squadron always carries at least two RB-79 Balls as support fire.

The GM is an agile mobile suit, with a maximum thruster acceleration of 0.94 G, a 180-degree turn around time of 1.6 seconds, and a maximum ground run speed of over 60 miles per hour (102 km/h), superior to the standard Zaku. Zeon and even Rick Dom in some parts. While the titanium-ceramic composite construction is slightly superior in protection compared to standard Zeon high-tensile steel, it is still insufficient to provide substantial protection against beam guns and heavy projectile ammunition which were standard when first launched. Because of this, GM is equipped with a full-scale titanium lunar shield for extra protection.

The introduction of GM in November calendar U.C.0079 will turn the tide of a total war against Zeon, (despite announcing that Zeon is already in retreat mode after the crushing defeat in Odessa). Despite not being as well armored as the standard Rick Dom MS-09r, and inferior to high-performance mass-production units like the MS-14 Gelgoog, GM benefits from Earth Federation superiority in terms of damage replacement technology and production/repair capacity. Zeon's focus on developing an excessive variety of experimental units hindered the support of their frontline troops even after the counterattack from the Federation began. Ultimately, Dom could not be fielded until late November, and Geelgog would not see his first deployment until the final two weeks of the One Year War. The final battle in A Baoa Qu shows Zeon's strategic mistakes, as the number of EFSF pilots (most of them ex-stratofighter pilots guided by combat data that has been analyzed from the learning computer system) in GM dominates Zeon veterans who drive untested mobile suits.

During the One Year War, 42 + 288 GMs were recorded (42 old types and 288 new types) and no more than 50 variants were produced, claim Gundam Officials and MG manual models. These numbers expire into the old semi canonical Gundam Century guidebook. Although many doubt this number in terms of its veracity (where just under 1000 GMs were produced during the One Year War) since 8 Top Ace Zeon has shot down a total of 1222 mobile suits according to MS Variations and History of One Year War (一年戦争史) books. . Some sources also state that the Zeon forces, unlike the EFSF, do not accurately count the shots that take down the enemy. With a squadron of 3 pilots shooting down one enemy mobile suit, this counts as one pilot killing one MS instead of three pilots dropping one MS. Another theory also says that Zeon also calculated the destruction of other combat vehicles including Balls, Tanks and fighter planes which even after the war still had 30,000 units left, enough to meet this number.

After the One Year War, the RGM-79 was designed to become the backbone of the EFF (Earth Federation Forces). Many Variations were produced during the 0080s, and the base frame was not replaced until the appearance of the RGM-89 Jegan in 0089. After the Jegan, although not as fast and heavily armed as the contemporary RGM-86 GM III, it has been chosen as the primary mobile suit for the Earth Federation. until the next three decades, the next GM series won't be called "GM'' anymore.
