The Ferrari 312T4 was a Formula 1 racing car that Scuderia Ferrari used
in the 1979 Formula 1 World Championship. The Scuderia won the
constructors 'cup with the 312T4 and Jody Scheckter the drivers' title.
Type of car and achievements
The 312T4 was Ferrari's first Ground Effect Formula 1 racing car, designed by Mauro Forghieri. The car had a narrow monocoque, but a wide body surface, which made up for the handicap of the wide V12 engine with its cylinder bank angle of 180°. The wheel suspensions were designed in such a way that they disrupted the flow of air under the car as little as possible.
Scheckter and Gilles Villeneuve each celebrated three victories of the season with the car. Scheckter, who joined the team for Carlos Reutemann, won the races in Belgium, Monaco, and Italy. Villeneuve remained in South Africa, at the US Grand Prix West, and in the US Grand Prix victory.
Scheckter won the drivers' world championship, four points ahead of his teammates. In the constructors' championship, Ferrari was 38 points ahead of Williams at the end of the season.
For the 1980 season, the vehicle was further developed into the T5 model.
