Ryuma is a legendary samurai from Wano Country in the New World who died and was made a Zombie General by Hogback. Ryuma is the same person as Ryuma in Oda's previous one-shot manga, Monsters. During the Thriller Bark Arc, he used Brook's shadow as a zombie.

Appearance

He has black hair that is tied in a topknot. He also wears a simple khaki samurai gi and simple zōri sandals. His facial characteristics are similar to Roronoa Zoro's.

As a zombie, Ryuma is slightly shorter than Brook. He had several bandages covering the skull part of his face. He has no eyes and no nose. Ryuma wears a samurai gi with an elaborate design from his original outfit. He also wears geta instead of zōri sandals like when he was alive. He has blue belly armor, but with a different design. He also wears a blue scarf that covers his mouth and a sword at his side. His black hair turned white. It might turn white with age when he dies. According to Hogback, Ryuma's body was special.

Personality

Lifetime

While still alive, Ryuma followed a philosophy centered on justice and honor. Ryuma firmly believes that saving lives is a debt that must be repaid by those with virtue, and the payment of this debt is the way of a true warrior. Ryuma also believed that battles should be measured by what was protected, not how much fame was gained.

As a swordsman, Ryuma has a strange habit. Whenever someone touched the scabbard with his hand, even by accident, Ryuma would immediately take action and take it as a form of challenge to a duel to the death. This behavior stems from Ryuma's belief that swordsmen are swordsmen. Despite having respectful intentions, that habit would lead to unnecessary bloody battles. He seems to be considered a hero in Wano Country, as Kin'emon stated that the country was in trouble after his body was robbed from the grave.

After Ryuma heard of the reputation of a "King", he hoped to fight him. He believed that a King must have a "Knight Soul" and would make him a worthy enemy. It's ironic considering he earned the nickname "King". The title "King" was bestowed on him by the people he saved, unfortunately, he didn't know that.

Ryuma also has poor financial management skills. Because of this, Ryuma often looks deprived and hungry for days.

After Death

As a zombie, Ryuma shares many of the same behaviors as Brook, from perverted habits to his trademark "Yo ho ho" laugh, as well as jokes about his corpse. This resemblance exists because he has Brook's shadow, and as shown in the Thriller Bark arc, the zombie has many personalities that are similar to the owner of the shadow used to revive him.

Even though Ryuma has Brook's personality, he has slightly different opinions on some things. For example, Brook appreciated his afro hair, but Ryuma only saw it as an eyesore. Ryuma also saw it as Brook's weakness that could be exploited in battle. He also behaves ruthlessly towards Brook, seemingly enjoying the physical and psychological pain inflicted and playing around in battle even though he can win quickly and easily. Ryan seems to have maintained his combat-loving attitude as a samurai while he was alive. He looks more like Zoro compared to Brook in this respect. He felt a deep shame when he was defeated by Zoro.
