Blue-Eyes (ブルーアイズBuruuaizu) is the archetype of a group of Dragon-type and LIGHT-attributed monsters, with the most famous being the Blue-Eyes White Dragon, popularized by rivals in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters, namely Seto Kaiba. Blue-Eyes is fairly strong in terms of ATK because Blue-Eyes White Dragon is a Normal Monster with the most ATK at this time.

Blue-Eyes in the Beginning

At the beginning of its launch Blue-Eyes only got a few support cards. Blue-Eyes White Dragon is only supported by some Spell Cards such as Burst Stream of Destruction. To summon the Blue-Eyes White Dragon quickly usually used support cards outside of the archetype such as Paladin of White Dragon, Kaibaman, Flute of Summoning Dragon, and Lord of D. However, because Blue-Eyes White Dragon is a Normal Monster, Normal support card Other monsters are also often used such as Ancient Rules, Swings of Memory, or Silver's Cry. Blue-Eyes also has other powerful monsters such as the Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon and Blue-Eyes Shining Dragon, but both are difficult to summon. Even though it has a lot of support cards, Blue-Eyes doesn't get much attention because the Summoned Skull Beatdown deck is considered faster and more consistent.

Archetype With the Eyes of Blue and Other Tuner Monsters Appear

The fate of Blue-Eyes did not change much when Dragon decks began to rise with the appearance of Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon. Duelists prefer the White Night Dragon over the Blue-Eyes White Dragon because it has an effect even though it is rarely used.

Blue-Eyes finally got support from Archetype With the Eyes of Blue, which is a set of Spellcaster-type monster tuners that support Blue-Eyes. The main strength of the With the Eyes of a Blue archetype is to summon Blue-Eyes White Dragons more easily and quickly, either from the hand, the graveyard, or directly from the deck. Not long after, Blue-Eyes got his first Synchro Monster Azure-Eyes Silver Dragon. But Blue-Eyes has not been able to show its fangs.

And Blue-Eyes finally got its first Tuner Monster named White Stone of Legend, which can be used to find Blue-Eyes White Dragon from the deck. With the appearance of this Tuner Monster, Blue-Eyes was once again ogled by the duelists. Together with the Tuner monster, the Blue-Eyes White Dragon is used as an engine on the Exodia deck. The good harmony shown together with the Spell Card Trade-In and Card of Consonance makes Blue-Eyes White Dragon and White Stone of Legend easy targets for these two cards. Especially if the White Stone of Legend enters the Graveyard, duelist friends can add Blue-Eyes White Dragon from the deck to the hand. This means that the Draw combo can be continued if the duelist buddy has a Trade-In in hand. Exodia Deep Draw is also assisted with other deck digging cards such as the Royal Magical Library, Upstart Goblin, One Day of Peace, and Super Rejuvenation. The possibility of winning this deck is very high, and finally makes Upstart Goblin and One Day of Peace Limited, even Super Rejuvenation becomes Forbidden.

The Emergence of the Blue-Eyes Main Support Card

2016 is arguably the year of Blue-Eyes because it finally got other supporting cards such as Blue-Eyes Alternative White Dragon, Dragon Spirit of White, White Stone of Ancient, Blue-Eyes Twin Burst Dragon, Neo Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon, Deep-Eyes White Dragon, new Synchro Monster Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon, and new Ritual Monster Blue-Eyes Chaos MAX Dragon.

The appearance of cards from Structure Deck R: Revival of Great Divine Dragon also features cards that can unleash Blue-Eyes potential. Cards such as Dragon's Shrine, Arkbrave Dragon, Return of Dragon Lord, Divine Dragon Lord Felgrand, and others made the Blue-Eyes Felgrand combination very popular at that time. But the true power of Blue-Eyes is not in this combination.

The true power of Blue-Eyes is in combination with With the Eyes of Blue. The emergence of new support cards specifically for Blue-Eyes, making the combination of these two archetypes very deadly. His newest Synchro Monster, Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon, can prohibit players from Special Summoning 2 or more monsters at once. This meant that it greatly suppressed the user of the Pendulum Summon which was the hottest summoning technique at the time. Especially when the opponent tries to get rid of the Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon, this monster can "escape" by sacrificing himself and summoning other Synchro Monsters, who are also the Azure-Eyes Silver Dragon. Normally, monsters summoned with this effect will be destroyed during the End Phase. But the Azure-Eyes Silver Dragon had the effect of nullifying the destruction of Dragon-type monsters until the End Phase when these monsters were summoned to the field. What's more, this monster can summon 1 Normal Monster from the Graveyard during the Standby Phase, duelist friends. Dragon Spirit of White will also be considered a Normal Monster while in the Graveyard, meaning that duelist friends can summon this monster as well and immediately banish 1 opponent's Spell/Trap card.

With the help of With the Eyes of Blue, duelist friends can summon the Blue-Eyes White Dragon quickly. Moreover, the Dragon Spirit of White is also considered a Blue-Eyes monster. So this deck is compact. Even Hiyama Shunsuke's Blue-Eyes deck won the Yu-Gi-Oh! world-class in 2016. Hiyama Shunsuke won against Erik Christensen who also used the Blue-Eyes deck with a different blend. No need to doubt the ability of Blue-Eyes.

Another strong variant of Blue-Eyes is the ritual deck that focuses on summoning the Blue-Eyes Chaos MAX Dragon, which is the Ritual Monster with the largest ATK to date. Only level 8 and being able to use materials from graveyards make this Ritual Monster easy to summon. Not only that, but Blue-Eyes Chaos MAX Dragon also cannot be targeted or destroyed by the opponent's card effects, and can deal double piercing damage, which means it can give battle damage even when attacking monsters in a defensive position, even the battle damage is doubled. It is not uncommon for this Blue-Eyes Chaos MAX Dragon to be combined with the Synchro Monster Phantasmal Lord Ultimitl Bishbaalkin, because this Synchro Monster can fill both fields with a monster Token that has DEF 0. This means 8000 damage directly to the opponent's LP, aka One Turn Kill (OTK).

Blue-Eyes in the Link Era

The new rules in the Link Era make Pendulum users less and switch to Link Summon. But that doesn't mean Blue-Eyes is a bad deck. Blue-Eyes can continue to survive in this Link era because it doesn't require a lot of summons from the Extra Deck. Around the end of 2017, Konami also launched Linkuriboh at TCG. Instantly Blue-Eyes was ogled again by the duelists. The combination of Blue-Eyes with Level Eater can unlock Linkuriboh's potential so that duelist friends can do Link Summons in succession. This Blue-Eyes and Level Eater combination deck is known as the Blue-Eyes Eater, and some call it the Blue-Eyes HyperLink because it can perform consecutive Link Summons and summon powerful monsters such as the Firewall Dragon and the Tri-Gate Wizard. The combo is also fairly simple because it only uses Blue-Eyes White Dragon and Blue-Eyes Alternative White Dragon to summon Level Eaters continuously so that they can do consecutive Link Summons. Besides Blue-Eyes, it turns out that Level Eater also has other "victims' ' such as Darklord, Timelord, Infernoid, Exodus, and many more. This makes the Level Eater Forbidden, even the Firewall Dragon Limited. For those who want to see the actions of Blue-Eyes Eater, you can watch the video below. Guaranteed after watching this video, duelist friends will understand why Level Eater must be Forbidden.

Still Getting New Support

Because of Konami's love for Blue-Eyes, in 2018 there was still new support for Blue-Eyes. First, the appearance of an upgraded version of Lord of D., namely The King of D. which will make The Melody of Awakening Dragon easily accessible. There's even a new Spell Card that is Dragon Revival Rhapsody which can summon 2 Dragon monsters at once from the Graveyard, one of which must be a Normal Monster, but it doesn't matter for Blue-Eyes because Blue-Eyes White Dragon is a Normal Monster and Dragon Spirit of White is also considered as a Normal Monster while in the Graveyard. Moreover, Dragon Revival Rhapsody can also be easily accessed using effects from The King of D.

Blue-Eyes is still getting new support cards that make this deck even more violent. Starting from the new Ritual Monster, Blue-Eyes Chaos Dragon, which is arguably the version of Blue-Eyes Chaos MAX Dragon because it has a smaller ATK, but the effect is no less extraordinary if previously summoned through Ritual Summon using Blue-Eyes White Dragon. As a material, Blue-Eyes Chaos Dragon will change the battle position of all opposing monsters and make the ATK and DEF of all opposing monsters to 0, plus Blue-Eyes Chaos Dragon will also provide piercing damage. This means that if the Blue-Eyes Chaos Dragon and Blue-Eyes Chaos MAX Dragon are successfully summoned together, One Turn Kill is not a difficult thing.

Blue-Eyes also got the Spell Card Bingo Machine, Go!! which duelists can use to access cards that have "Blue-Eyes" in their name or card text. There is also a new monster, the Blue-Eyes Solid Dragon, which can negate 1 monster when summoned and can return to the deck to summon the Blue-Eyes White Dragon. There is also a Quick-Play Spell Rage with Eyes of Blue which can be called an all-out attack card because with banish in Face-down from the hand, field, and Graveyard duelist friends, 3 Blue-Eyes White Dragons can be summoned from the Deck. And the most brutal is the Trap Card The Ultimate Creature of Destruction which will make the Blue-Eyes White Dragon immune to the effects of any card and will not be defeated even through battle. A super card because it can return to the Field when a Blue-Eyes White Dragon is successfully summoned to the Field.

Conclusion

Long story short Blue-Eyes is a strong deck because it is supported by monsters with large ATK. For those who like Power Deck aka Aggressive Deck, Blue-Eyes is the right choice. Moreover, the Blue-Eyes White Dragon is one of the iconic monsters in Yu-Gi-Oh! and it will be a matter of pride to be able to summon this one monster. If you have any questions about Yu-Gi-Oh!
