When you talk about your childhood, you certainly can't deny that the game Crash Bandicoot became a part of your childhood for those of you who were born or grew up in the 1990s. Crash Bandicoot is a game franchise created by Andy Gavin and Jason Rubin when they were still serving at a game development company called Naughty Dog. The game series, which was first released in September 1996, was originally released exclusively for the PlayStation. But now, the Crash Bandicoot series is also present on various other platforms.

The popularity of the Crash Bandicoot series led to this series being expanded to 18 games and has sold more than 50 million copies worldwide. The Crash Bandicoot series features a bandicoot named Crash as the main character. In this series, Crash must face Doctor Neo Cortex, the scientist who created Crash, who has evil intentions to rule the world.

The success of Crash Bandicoot certainly has many interesting facts. Well, here are the Crash Bandicoot facts that you may not know. Come on, see!

1. Almost Named Willy the Wombat

As reported by Polygon, the founders of Naughty Dog, namely Jason Rubin and Andy Gavin, explained that before finding the character Crash Bandicoot, they looked for inspiration through books about animals that exist in Tasmania. This is done to find animals that have never been the main character in the game. Finally, they found a bandicoot and a wombat.

Initially, Rubin and Gavin chose a wombat as the main character of their game, and they even named the character Willy the Wombat. As we know, these names and characters have never been realized. According to Gavin on his blog, Naughty Dog felt Willy the Wombat was not suitable because the name was considered too tacky.

In addition, the Willie Wombat character is already in the Taz-Mania cartoon. Finally, Naughty Dog chose bandicoot as the main character of their game. The name Crash was chosen because this character likes to destroy wooden boxes in the game.

2. Crash's girlfriend, Tawna, will initially appear as a supersexy character.

In his interview with Crash Mania, Rubin explained that Naughty Dog's original plan when creating Tawna was to make her a super sexy character. Know the character Jessica Rabbit from the movie Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988)? Well, initially, Tawna was created using high heels, has very long legs, and makeup and clothes that are no less sexy than Jessica Rabbit's character. If you are curious about the initial appearance of Tawna, you can see it here.

The display was not used because the officials of Universal Interactive, the company that published Crash Bandicoot at the time, strongly disagreed with Tawna's initial concept. The top executive—Universal Interactive was led by a girl at that time—was fed up with the media's behavior that objectified girls, including in games.

The anger of Universal Interactive's top brass forced Naughty Dog to reduce Tawna's sexiness. Like the look you've seen on Crash Bandicoot, Tawna finally appeared with shorter legs, sneakers, a less curvaceous body, and a T-shirt for a more modest look.

3. Naughty Dog Stops Making Crash Bandicoot Series Since 1999

Naughty Dog has only handled the first four series of the Crash Bandicoot franchise. The last Crash Bandicoot series developed by Naughty Dog was Crash Team Racing (CTR) which was released in September 1999. After that, Naughty Dog decided not to renew the Crash Bandicoot licensing agreement and gave Sony and Universal full control over the Crash Bandicoot franchise.

The collaboration between Sony and Universal also only lasted on one game, namely Crash Bash. After that, Universal got sole ownership of the Crash Bandicoot franchise. Crash Bandicoot's license doesn't just end at Universal. In 2003, ownership moved to Vivendi Universal Games. In 2008, Activision purchased the Crash Bandicoot license and still holds it today.

4. Crash Bandicoot Almost Has an Intro and Ending in the style of Cartoon

Crash Bandicoot which we already know has an intro and ending with a 3-D display, the same as what we get when playing the game. However, at the beginning of its development, the intro and ending of Crash Bandicoot were prepared with a different appearance, namely the appearance of an old cartoon series.

If you watch the video above, you will find an intro and ending the video with 2-D images and a cheerful introductory song that is at least immortal; it reminds you of the Animaniacs cartoon series. Well, once Sony joined as one of the publishers of Crash Bandicoot, the appearance of the intro and ending was completely overhauled. You see, Sony wants all parts of the game to have a 3-D view.

5. You Can Play Crash Bandicoot when Playing Uncharted 4

If you play Uncharted 4, you will find an easter egg which is quite surprising. Yep, you will see Crash Bandicoot on Uncharted 4. For your information, here, the Uncharted series was also developed by Naughty Dog, you know. So, it's not surprising that Crash Bandicoot was able to appear in Uncharted 4.

In Chapter 4 of Uncharted 4, ask Nathan Drake to prepare food for his wife, Elena. When the two of them ate, Nathan would talk about the game that Elena often played. Later, Nathan wants to prove to Elena that he can beat Elena's highest score. When Elena turned on the PlayStation, it turned out that the game they both meant was Crash Bandicoot. After that, you have to play the game to beat Elena's score.
