Big body and savage are two things that are always identified with dinosaurs. It is undeniable that some types of dinosaurs are very wild and have a very large size. But their depiction as giant beasts is not always true, you know!

1. Dinosaurs weren't the first animals to live on Earth

Dinosaurs evolved about 230 million years ago on an old continent called Pangaea. But when the dinosaurs came the Earth was not empty. This is because, before the dinosaurs, the Earth was inhabited by reptiles such as archosaurs, which are lizards, therapsids, and several other types of reptiles.

However, the existence of these reptiles did not last long, because 20 million years later these reptiles began to become extinct, leaving only prehistoric crocodiles.

2. The majority of dinosaurs were vegetarian

As discussed earlier, most people think that all dinosaurs were meat-eaters. But the fact is, the majority of dinosaurs were vegetarians. Indeed dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex and Giganotosaurus were meat-eaters.

Even so, the population is not comparable to the plant-eaters. One of the characteristics is, plant eaters have four legs while meat-eaters such as the T-Rex have two legs.

3. Some dinosaurs were also furry

Movies with dinosaur themes always depict this ancient animal as having hard and scaly skin like a lizard. There are also many dinosaurs whose bodies are covered with feathers. In addition, not all dinosaurs are also large.

Indeed there are several types such as Brachiosaurus weighing 80 tons, but the majority of dinosaurs had a size as large as a human or smaller than that.

4. Not all dinosaurs are stupid

Having a large body does not guarantee a smart dinosaur. Stegosaurus, for example, had a brain no bigger than two walnuts and weighed about five ounces. But that doesn't mean all dinosaurs are as stupid as Stegosaurus.

Flesh-eating dinosaurs like the T-Rex were gifted not only with large bodies with sharp teeth but also with large brains. In addition, the T-Rex also has eyesight, smell, agility, and excellent coordination to hunt prey.

5. Lastly, they didn't go extinct at the same time

The story circulating is, the dinosaurs became extinct by a meteor shower that occurred 65 million years ago. Many dinosaurs indeed died due to meteor showers, but the disaster did not make all dinosaurs extinct.

It took thousands of years for Earth to make the planet safe from ancient animals like dinosaurs. And instead of meteor strikes, changing climates, lack of sunlight, and plants made the dinosaurs truly extinct.
