Several facts can explain why Luffy's real name devil fruit is the Hito Hito no Mi model Sun God aka the Sun God.

This fact will also explain that Luffy's Awakening will be his chance to Sun God mode.

In the deadly duel on the roof of Onigashima castle between Luffy vs. Kaido, the Yonkou always tried to avoid the Straw Hat captain's fire fists, Red Hawk and Red Rock.

The Red Hawk fist is a fire fist created from a combination of Gear 2nd and Busoshoku Haki techniques.

While Red Rock is a fire-fist technique created from a combination of Gear 2nd, Gear 3rd, and Busoshoku Haki.

So that in Gear 4th mode, Luffy can immediately issue his fire fist like Red Rock. This is also what causes Luffy's body to always emit smoke in Gear 4th mode.

Based on the fact that Kaido is afraid of Luffy's fire fists, Oda seems to be hinting that this Sun God Awakening mode of Luffy will be full of fire.

In other words, the environment around Luffy will be full of fire and even melt due to Luffy's Awakening.

Then after Luffy's body temperature becomes very hot like the sun, he will also get a drastic increase in stamina and this allows him to enter any Gear mode without fatigue.

Another proof of this theory can be found in Madam Shyarly's prophecy on Fish-Man Island.

It was then that Madam Shyarly saw that Luffy in the future would destroy Fish-Man Island.

Then on her prophecy ball, Madam Shyarly saw Luffy who was not in Gear mode standing tall with a body covered in flames.

You may ask, Luffy who has the power of rubber is supposed to be very weak against fire, but why is he depicted as being surrounded by fire?

The answer is because, in the prophecy, Luffy is already in Sun God Awakening mode.

The fire that surrounds Luffy is very hot as the sun.

Although he can't transform into the fire, Luffy in this Awakening mode has become a Sun God.
