The results of Tony Southgate's design again invited admiration when the Arrow A2 was launched in 1979 F1. The Arrow A2's design was somewhat radical compared to its predecessor, the A1B, which was revealed in the first seven races of F1 1979.

A2 arguably does not use the front wing to get the compressive force. The design of the A2 does look striking from any point of view. The wide bald tires seem to wrap around the main body which is slim and smooth without joints.

However, the elegant and futuristic appearance of the Arrow A2 doesn't match its performance. A2 can not be stable and is difficult to control on a straight track until Jochen Mass called the handling of the A2 "terrible".

Dropped from the eighth to 15th (last) race, Arrow A2's best finishes were only two sixth-place finishes (Germany and Holland) through Mass. The Warsteiner Arrows Racing Team immediately retired the A2 as soon as the 1979 F1 season was over.
