Initially, Brook was a former member of the Rumbar Pirates before joining the Straw Hat Pirates in the One Piece anime.

Brook is a musician in the Rumbar pirate group decades ago, before the heyday of the Gol D Roger pirates in the One Piece anime.

But unlucky, the Rumbar pirates were hit by a deadly disease outbreak until all the Rumbar pirate groups died including Brook.

However, Brook revived in the form of bones due to the effects of eating the previous Yomi-Yomi No Mi devil fruit,

The Yomi-Yomi No Mi is a Paramecia-type devil fruit related to the soul that Brook ate.

Brook also lives only in the shape of his bones and on a wrecked ship belonging to the Rumbar pirates.

In the middle of his journey, Brook met Gecko Moria, a Shichibukai who can take a person's shadow.

Finally, Gecko Moria stole Brook's shadow during the Thriller Bark arc, Brook couldn't touch the sun anymore because his shadow had been stolen by Gecko Moria.

Unexpectedly Luffy and his colleagues met Brook on the island of Thilerr Bark, Luffy knew Gecko Moria's crime beat him and freed the shadows of people including Brook.

After Luffy's fierce fight against Gecko Moria, Brook was invited to join the Straw Hat group by Luffy.

Finally, Brook has a partner again after experiencing loneliness aboard the pirate ship Rumbar for decades.

After starting his pirate journey with the Straw Hats, Brook earned the nickname Soul King.

His nickname is Soul King because Brook can change the souls of people who want to fight him into obedient just by the sound of his music.
