Before we move on to the papercraft section, it's a good idea to first look at these 5 dark facts about the Gundam RX-78-2.

Gundam RX-78-2 from the Mobile Suit Gundam series is one of the most iconic giant robots in the history of science fiction. Unlike other robots that appeared in the 70s, the RX-78-2 was deliberately designed from the start to become a powerful war machine. This mecha is piloted by Amuro Ray and has often fought against various enemies.

So far, the Gundam series is still the most popular worldwide. However, even though there are many variants of the latest Gundam, the RX-78-2 remains the most popular mecha. Unfortunately, behind the mecha's popularity, it turns out to have a "dark secret" that many fans believe in. So, what are the dark secrets?

Increase the Tension of War

The RX-78-2 is probably the most popular mecha out there, but it's not the first mecha. Although the RX-78-2 is very popular, this mecha is believed to be the cause of the ongoing war in the series. Why does this happen? Because the RX-78-2 is a popular model, Bandai still wants to continue to present other mechas.

The RX-78-1 is the first mobile suit or mecha developed by Project V, which was prepared for close combat. Later RX-78s were developed to take advantage of their speed, lethal short-range attacks, and strong defense. The RX-78-1 itself was developed from the RX-77-2 or commonly known as the Guncannon.

Development continued, where Project V then developed a mecha that is lightweight, capable of fighting well at close range, and able to move quickly. And finally created the RX-78-2. This mecha also became a prototype for even more lethal models, the RGM-79 GM and RX-78NT-1.

Delivering Trauma to the Pilot

The RX-78-2 was deliberately designed to finish off the enemy very quickly and in close to medium range. Previously, the Federation made various mechas for medium to long range, therefore the Guncannon was fitted with two heavy cannons on its shoulders, to add fire-power tremendously. However, making mecha for a close range like the RX-78-2 causes unpleasant side effects.

When close-quarters combat ensues, Gundam pilots are sure to see how their enemy is destroyed before their own eyes. And usually, the defeat or destruction of the enemy occurs brutally. It is not uncommon for pilots to be traumatized by the situation.

Originally Rejected Model

Did you know that the RX-78 model was initially rejected by the Earth Federation, which proved that the decision was the wrong one? The engineer behind the RX-78-2, Amuro Ray's father, Tem Ray, previously proposed the RX-78 model after he studied Zeon's MS-04 Bugu. However, to make Bugu has been proven that requires very large funds.

Ray then realizes that Zeon is trying to build a mobile suit that focuses on movement speed, agility, and mobility rather than overwhelming strength. The Earth Federation flatly rejected Ray's proposal and even said it was a bad design. And in the Battle of Mare Smytii, four MS-05 Zakus and one MS-04 Bugu were shown to be capable of destroying a dozen Guncannons, proving that even though Guncannons have firepower, they are useless if they can't hit the enemy.

RX-78-2 Triggers War

Although the war between Zeon and the Earth Federation has been going on for a long time, it was when the RX-78-2 appeared that the One-Year War event occurred. The attack of the Zeon forces led by Char Aznable on the Earth Federation Colony Side 7, finally uncovered the "secret" of the Federation which was developing this mecha.

Had Amuro Ray not fallen into the cockpit of the RX-78-2, the war might never have happened. Knowing that the Federation has new weapons, Zeon realizes that they are in danger. This moment then increased the tension of the robot war between the two camps, becoming the culmination of a story that thrilled Zeon and the Federation.

Scared By Zeon

While most people think of the RX-78-2 as a Gundam or a mobile suit, those in the Zeon camp have another name for the RX-78-2 which is the 'white devil.' This is because the awesomeness of the RX-78-2 is hard to stop. This is a machine that was initially rejected and considered a disaster but turned into something that turned things around.

The most terrifying and also extraordinary of the RX-78-2 is how this machine can outperform various other powerful mobile suits. For example, this mecha once destroyed the MA-08 Big Zam. Amuro managed to get past Big Zam's defenses and managed to destroy the mecha.

Zeon also made the same mistake as the Earth Federation, where they underestimated the RX-78-2. They don't realize how dangerous the RX-78-2 is, where its agility and speed can overpower the enormous firepower of their various mechas.
