The FW11 was slightly updated for 1987, becoming the FW11B, and the team made no mistakes in winning both championships. Honda was now supplying Lotus with the same engine as Williams (though Lotus used the 1986 RA166E engine rather than the 1987 RA167E engine used by Williams), which helped Ayrton Senna challenge consistently, but the FW11's superiority showed, and Piquet finished in the points (mostly on the podium) in every race except San Marino.

Mansell won six races, including a memorable come-from-behind victory at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, where he passed Piquet for the lead with only three laps remaining. He won twice as many races as Piquet, but he was plagued by bad luck and unreliability. After a major crash during practice for the Japanese Grand Prix, Piquet's third championship was assured.

The FW11B was the final Williams to race with a Honda engine, with Honda announcing during the season that they would be moving to McLaren from 1988, despite having a year left on their contract with Williams.
