The Mogami-class frigate (also known as 30FFM, 30FF, 30DX, or 30DEX) is a multi-mission stealth frigate built for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF).
The Japanese defense budget allocated funds in 2015 to research the development of a new "compact-type hull destroyer with additional multi-functional capabilities," as well as a new radar system for the destroyer. The same year, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) unveiled the frigate's first concept model (30FF), which they had been working on with their own money.
The Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics Agency (ATLA) chose MHI and Mitsui Engineering and Shipbuilding as the prime contractor and subcontractor for the frigate in August 2017. Furthermore, the agency chose a completely new vessel design (30DX). The Asagiri-class destroyers and Abukuma-class destroyer escorts will be replaced by the new ship.
The 30DX's construction was set to begin in 2018. A total of twenty-two units are planned to be built to this design by 2032, with the first eight under contract by 2018; a pair is to be built each year.
