Famous Because of the Initial-D Anime, Turns Out This Is the History of the Toyota AE86, Also Used by the King of Drifting Keiichi Tsuchiya Lo.

paper hOles friends who are also lovers of Japan, aka Wibu, must have watched an anime called Initial D.

For those who don't know, the anime Initial D tells of a high school student named Takumi Fujiwara who helps his father's business that sells tofu.

So, when delivering tofu to his customers, Takumi Fujiwara had to ride his father's Toyota AE86.

One of his customers is at the foot of Mount Akina, Japan, so he has to drive through the mountain pass.

Interestingly, this Mount Akina route has many turns that make Takumi have extraordinary drifting skills.

So good at it, Takumi Fujiwara even raced with other cars, such as the Mazda RX-7 driven by Keisuke Takahashi.

Apart from the story of the Initial D anime, actually, the Toyota AE86, or what is often called Hachiroku also exists in the real world.

Launching from Drivetribe.com, the Toyota AE86 was first marketed in 1983 and discontinued in 1987.

The name AE86 turns out to have quite a long meaning, starting from the code 'A' which is a sign that this car uses a 4A series engine, 4A-GE to be precise.

Then the code 'E' is defined for the Corolla model, and code '8' means this car is the E80 model, aka the fifth generation of Corolla.

Finally, the code '6' means that the AE86 is the sixth variant of the E80 model.

The Toyota AE86 comes in two versions, namely the Toyota Corolla Levin which does not use a pop-up headlamp.

Then there is the Toyota Corolla Sprinter Trueno version which uses a pop-up headlamp.

For the spur kitchen, the two versions of Hachiroku use the same engine, namely a 4-cylinder coded 4A-GE DOHC with a capacity of 1,600 ccs.

This machine is said to be capable of producing 130 hp and 140 Nm torque which is then channeled to the rear-wheel drive or Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) via a 5-speed manual gearbox.

Interestingly, the Toyota AE86 only weighs around 900 kg, so the Power to Weight Ratio (PWR) is good.

Coupled with the RWD driving system and the Limited Slip Differential (LSD), this makes the AE86 a great car to drift with.

So, it's not surprising that the king of drifting from Japan, Keiichi Tsuchiya, used the Toyota AE86 to compete.

Takumi Fujiwara used AE86 to beat his opponents in the anime Initial D.
