Kimetsu no Yaiba: The Wind Hashira
Sanemi is hailed as the second strongest Hashira!
Sanemi Shinazugawa is one of the main supporting characters in the Kimetsu no Yaiba series. He first appears in chapter 45 of the manga and episode 22 of the anime, right when Tanjiro and Nezuko are brought before Oyakata-sama.
Let’s dive deeper into the fierce character that is Sanemi! Here are some interesting facts about him:
1. Basic Info About Sanemi
Sanemi is portrayed as a 21-year-old man born on November 29th. He has a muscular build, standing at 179 cm tall and weighing 75 kg.
One of his most distinctive features is the scar on his face, which he got while fighting demons before joining the Demon Slayer Corps.
2. Sanemi's Personality
There's no doubt—Sanemi is a tough, cold-blooded, hot-tempered, and stubborn character. He doesn't seem to communicate well, even with other Demon Slayers.
Sanemi's intense anger makes him intimidating to others. Besides, he’s introduced as a bloodthirsty individual who eagerly anticipates intense battles with powerful demons.
3. His Behavior Changes Around Oyakata-sama
Interestingly, Sanemi's wild behavior completely changes when he's in the presence of Ubuyashiki, also known as Oyakata-sama, the leader of the Demon Slayer Corps.
This shows that even though Sanemi is generally harsh, he still holds a deep respect for his superior, who considers all the Corps members as his precious children.
Of course, Sanemi didn't show this respect right from the start. However, Oyakata-sama’s wisdom and presence eventually won over Sanemi’s heart.
4. He Despises Demons
All human characters in Kimetsu no Yaiba have some level of hatred toward demons since these creatures have preyed on and disrupted human lives.
But Sanemi’s hatred runs deeper due to a personal loss he experienced, which is why he was so furious when Nezuko was brought before Oyakata-sama and the other Hashira, despite his respect for Oyakata-sama.
5. He Has Rare Marechi Blood
In Kimetsu no Yaiba, Marechi blood is extremely rare. This blood can excite demons who catch its scent, causing them to lose focus.
Another character with Marechi blood is Kiyoshi, who was targeted by demons and kidnapped to Tsuzumi Mansion by Lower Rank 6 demon, Kyogai.
6. Older Brother to Genya Shinazugawa & Their Past
Fans might have guessed that Sanemi is Genya’s older brother. They grew up with an abusive father, a loving mother, and five other siblings.
After their father’s death, Sanemi worked to support their mother. However, tragedy struck when their mother turned into a demon and killed five of their siblings.
When the demonized mother tried to attack Genya, Sanemi quickly stepped in to protect his brother and killed their mother, even though he sustained severe facial injuries.
7. Sanemi Suffers From Color Blindness
The injuries Sanemi sustained from his mother’s attack didn’t just leave scars—they also affected his eyesight, causing color blindness.
Because of this, Sanemi struggles with poor vision, especially at night.
8. His Relationship with Genya Seems Strained
The traumatic past that Sanemi and Genya shared has strained their relationship as siblings. Throughout the series, it seems like Sanemi hates Genya and refuses to acknowledge him as his brother.
However, it’s later revealed that Sanemi doesn’t actually hate Genya. As an older brother, he doesn’t want Genya to be in danger. The only way he knows to protect Genya is by keeping him at a distance.
9. The Second Strongest Hashira
Sanemi Shinazugawa is recognized as the second strongest Hashira, right after Gyomei Himejima, the Stone Hashira.
Sanemi’s talent as a Demon Slayer was evident even before he joined the Corps. Before that, he had already killed many demons without using a special Nichirin sword or mastering breathing techniques.
Even Muzan, the Demon King, acknowledges Sanemi’s strength!
10. Master of Wind Breathing Techniques
Sanemi Shinazugawa is the Hashira who has mastered Wind Breathing techniques. His skills are exceptional, and he’s regarded as the best Wind Breathing user of his generation.
His abilities are so impressive that they reminded Kokushibo of the first Wind Hashira from the Sengoku era, a golden age for Demon Slayers.
Sanemi has mastered several techniques, including:
- First Form: Dust Whirlwind Cutter
- Second Form: Claws, Purifying Wind
- Third Form: Clean Storm Wind Tree

11. His Close Friend, Masachika Kumeno
At first glance, it might be hard to believe that someone could get along with the rough Sanemi. But surprisingly, Sanemi had a close friend in the Demon Slayer Corps, Masachika Kumeno.
Masachika became a Demon Slayer before Sanemi. He introduced Sanemi to the teacher who later trained him in breathing techniques. Masachika even considered Sanemi his brother.
Unfortunately, Masachika's life was cut short. He died fighting Lower Rank 1 demon alongside Sanemi when they were still at the Kinoe rank.
12. Awakening the Demon Slayer Mark
Like other Hashira who awakened the Demon Slayer Mark during the final battle, Sanemi also achieved this feat while fighting Kokushibo.
Sanemi’s Demon Slayer Mark looks like a green windmill. This mark automatically enhances Sanemi's physical abilities, increasing his stamina, strength, and pain tolerance.
13. Sacrificing Something Precious to Defeat Kokushibo
Sanemi fought Kokushibo alongside other Demon Slayers, including Muichiro, Gyomei, and Genya. To defeat the strongest Upper Rank demon, Sanemi had to sacrifice several fingers.
However, this loss pales in comparison to the death of his brother, Genya, who was the last family member Sanemi had left.
14. One of the Surviving Hashira After the Battle with Muzan
The brutal battle to defeat the Demon King, Muzan, claimed many lives. Even some of the strongest Hashira perished in this war.
Sanemi Shinazugawa, the Wind Hashira, was one of the three Hashira who survived. Alongside him were Giyu Tomioka, the Water Hashira, and Tengen Uzui, the Sound Hashira, who had already retired after the battle against Gyutaro and Daki.
