Renault R26 is a Formula One car designed by the Renault F1 team for the 2006 F1 racing season. This car was designed by Bob Bell and successfully led Fernando Alonso to become world champion for the second time in a row.
It is undeniable that Alonso has changed the history of F1 in Spain. He made the people there crazy about land jet racing. All knick-knacks, such as hats and blue-yellow T-shirts, are selling well.
Of course, Renault reaped the benefits of the euphoria. Their image also rose. Moreover, yellow and blue are the colors of the flag of Asturias, the 39-year-old racer's hometown.
"We were lucky that time because the car was blue, that's also the color of Asturias," said Renault team boss at the time, Flavio Briatore.
The Catalunya Circuit, Barcelona, also turned blue. Renault earned 75,000 support at the 2006 Spanish Grand Prix.
The number of F1 spectators in Spain swelled a year later to 354,700. Even though Alonso has moved to McLaren, many of them are still wearing light blue shirts.
Until now, there is still curiosity about the color choice of Renault cars at that time. In the podcast Beyond the victory, with Nico Rosberg, Briatore gives the answer.
The Italian businessman revealed the desire of Renault officials when it acquired Benetton, which competes until 2021.
"At that time, Renault management emphasized to me the importance of the value of Renault's recognition is very important. They also want to see yellow and black," he said.
Of course, Briatore was not happy to hear the request because he was under contract with the cigarette manufacturer Mild Seven, which was already Benetton's sponsor.
The 70-year-old man prepared a precise strategy so that Renault officials would follow his wishes. Because, the launch of the car for the 2002 F1 is getting closer.
"I asked Renault if they wanted to finance the whole team themselves," he said.
“Based on the presentation, I showed Renault their dream car, which was yellow. I said, 'Your dream will cost 150 million euros'.
"Then I showed them the blue car and said, 'This is the reality. With this deal, you are only charged 50 million euros.' Suddenly, everyone likes blue cars,” he recounts with a laugh.
The blue-yellow color was removed when Alonso joined McLaren and Mild Seven was no longer the team's sponsor.
