Infantry fighting vehicle - 3 - armored tracked combat vehicle designed to transport personnel to the front line, increase their mobility, armament and security on the battlefield in conditions of the use of nuclear weapons and joint actions with tanks in battle. Development of the Kurgan JSC SKBM. BMP-3 ("Object 688M") has been developed since 1977, after testing prototypes in 1983-1986, in 1987 it was adopted by the Soviet Army.
When forming the tactical and technical assignment for its creation, the conclusions from the analysis of trends in the development and combat use of domestic and foreign infantry fighting vehicles, changes in the conditions for the use of infantry in modern combined arms combat were taken into account. This task was supplemented with special requirements for the chassis of military tracked vehicles of the light category in terms of mass, unified by components and assemblies. In accordance with the imposed requirements, the BMP should ensure the possibility of close and continuous interaction of motorized riflemen with the main tanks, as well as the autonomous use of motorized rifle units in the conditions of using both conventional combat means and weapons of mass destruction.
The vehicle uses an unconventional weapon system. It includes a 100-mm gun-launcher 2A70 mounted in a single mask for firing high-explosive fragmentation projectiles and 9M117 guided missiles; 30-mm automatic cannon 2A72, capable of firing high-explosive fragmentation incendiary (OFZ), fragmentation tracer (OT), armor-piercing tracer (BT) and armor-piercing subcaliber (BP) shells, as well as a 7.62-mm PKT machine gun. In addition, there are 2 course mounts with 7.62-mm PKT machine guns and fiber-optic aiming devices, 4 onboard and 1 aft embrasures for firing from machine guns. The vehicle is also equipped with other types of weapons that can be used by a dismounted combat crew (landing party). These are the RPG-7 (or RPG-16) hand-held anti-tank grenade launcher, 5 RPG-18 or RPG-22 anti-tank rocket grenades, 2 Strela-3 anti-aircraft systems, 15 F-1 grenades.
For 2011, the BMP-3 is one of the vehicles in use and can be compared with such models as the Puma, TH-495 and Bradley M2A3. BMP-3 is produced by JSC Kurganmashzavod.
