In the One Piece series, Roronoa Zoro is the first crew member and also the second strongest person in the Straw Hat Pirates. At least, until Jinbe stepped in and made the Straw Hats' power rankings more interesting.

So what are the interesting facts that Zoro has? Let's see the list here!

1. Zoro's name is taken from a real pirate

This first One Piece Zoro fact might surprise you. Zoro is the only straw hat pirate crew that has the name of a real pirate in ancient times. Roronoa's name is taken from a pirate named François L'ollonais who was the cruelest pirate in the Caribbean area of his time. L'ollonais in Japanese is pronounced Roronoa.

2. Zoro's favorite food? Rice

Zoro's favorite food is rice. In addition, he also likes to eat monster meat, or anything that tastes good when eaten while drinking sake.

This is reflected in one of Zoro's mainstay moves, namely onigiri. Onigiri can indeed be translated as "Devil Slayer," but it is also the name of a rice dish from Japan.

Besides food, Zoro's favorite drink is sake. Since his defeat to Mihawk, Zoro's routine even seems to be just sleeping, training, then drinking sake and eating.

3. Originally planned to be Buggy's minions

For the next One Piece Zoro fact: did you know that this guy was originally designed by Oda as Buggy's subordinate? In the interview with Oda recorded in the third volume of the comic, Zoro was originally one of the bodyguards of the Buggy pirates.

The Buggy Pirates were originally a pirate with a family system which also made Zoro the eldest brother among the guards. In the end Zoro in the manga and anime has absolutely no attachment to Buggy.

But it will also be interesting how the structure of the Straw Hats group will be if Oda uses this plan. Will Nami be Luffy's right-hand man, Zoro's replacement?

4. His favorite swords are Wado Ichimonji and Shusui

If you are a fan of One Piece, you must be familiar with the sword with the white handle that Zoro always carries and is also a legacy sword from Kuina.

Since the first time One Piece was made, Zoro's sword has survived to this day as Wado Ichimonji who is also one of the 21 Saijo O Wazamono. This sword is even able to survive when colliding with Mihawk's Yoru.

Zoro's first two swords were destroyed in the confrontation, but not so with Wado Ichimonji.

Zoro also always takes this sword when fighting. Wado Ichimonji is the one he uses the most. In fact, if he uses a move that only uses one sword, then Wado Ichimonji will be the one he will choose to execute. Wado Ichimonji is also a sword that he always bites when using the Santoryu technique.

After the time skip, Zoro's favorite sword is Shusui. He often uses the sword for a one-sword stance.

But, then Zoro was forced to give up Shusui back to Wano.

5. Has wounds on his face and chest, like Luffy

Luffy and Zoro have scars on their faces and stomach area.

For Luffy, the wound on his face is a scratch mark he made as a child. The wound on his chest was the mark of Akainu's attack on Marineford.

Meanwhile, Zoro has a long scar from Yoru's slash. Then when he reappeared in the timeskip, he had a scar on his eye. The eye crossed by the scar did not open again until now.

6. Like not wanting to call Sanji's name

Of course you often see Zoro and Sanji always fighting over trivial things. They both also often insult each other. Zoro always annoys Sanji as a "perverted chef" while Sanji often annoys Zoro as "Marimo" which means moss head.

But did you know that for more than 20 years of One Piece comics, Zoro has never even mentioned Sanji's name? Yes, that's what happened so far. We'll see if this will continue until One Piece ends, or if there will be a serious moment that forces Zoro to call out Sanji's name.

7. Never killed a dragon, like Ryuma

Besides Ryuma, Zoro is also a character in One Piece who is known to have killed dragons. If you are confused about when Zoro killed the dragon, you can watch or reread the Punk Hazard arc.

When Luffy, Zoro, Robin and Usopp entered this forbidden island, they met a legendary animal, a dragon. After working together to kill this dragon, Zoro got the final slash which made him the one who killed the dragon.

It's a dragon made by Vegapunk anyway, so maybe it's not as powerful as the one Ryuma defeated before. But still it's an achievement in itself.

8. Luffy has been after them since before they met

Luffy always invites his crew members after meeting them. But when Luffy was alone with Coby, Luffy had decided to invite Zoro just because he heard he was great.

Luffy's desire to invite Zoro to become a member increased after hearing Zoro was a good person. It happened even before Luffy met Zoro.

Luffy's decision then proved right, because Zoro was his most loyal subordinate. Zoro is even willing to accept all the wounds that Luffy suffered at Thriller Bark so that Kuma doesn't catch his captain. Zoro also did not expect the slightest reward for his sacrifice, because he did not convey it to anyone.

9. Always the second favorite Straw Hat character, only lost to Luffy

In the favorite character poll for the One Piece series, Zoro is always second among the Straw Hats after Luffy.

In six polls, Zoro also five times became the second most favorite character in the entire One Piece manga. He has only been surpassed once, in the fifth poll by Trafalgar Law.

10. The battle with Kuina made him tread this path

At the beginning of entering the dojo, Zoro seemed to have managed to defeat several students there using many swords at once. He believed that the more swords the stronger the fight.

But all that changed when he was defeated by Kuina who only used one sword. After losing to Kuina and being told that multiple swords don't make one strong, Zoro begins to practice using only two swords. He also tried to defeat Kuina with the two swords.

After Kuina died, Zoro asked his teacher to give Kuina a sword. Since then Zoro started practicing his Santoryu style until now.

11. He is from Shimotsuki Village, and has heard of "Sunacchi!" from Shimotsuki Kozaburo

See the symbol on the chest of Koushirou, Zoro's teacher? The crossed sword is the symbol of the Shimotsuki clan in Wano.

Zoro's own village name is Shimotsuki. In that village, the legendary Shimotsuki Kozaburo once lived.

In case you didn't know, Kozaburo was the one who created Wado Ichimonji.

Zoro himself according to SBS volume 96 heard the cry "Sunnachi!" from Shimotsuki Kozaburo. He then lowered the call to Momonosuke.

Koushirou, Zoro's teacher, is actually Kozaburo's son. So it seems, Koushirou's full name is Shimotsuki Koushirou.

12. The sword changes frequently

Zoro has changed his sword several times before. The two nameless swords shattered after fighting Mihawk. Then, in Loguetown he obtained Yubashiri and Sandai Kitetsu.

Yubashiri was then destroyed at the end of Enies Lobby. In exchange, Zoro obtained Shusui.

Shusui was asked back by the residents of Wano. Instead, Kozuki Hiyori handed Enma's sword to Zoro.

As of this writing, Zoro's swords consist of Sandai Kitetsu, Wado Ichimonji, and Enma.

13. In the Wano plot, his bounty lags behind Sanji and Jinbe

Zoro usually has the number two bounty in the Straw Hats.

However, because he did not participate in the Whole Cake Island plot, Sanji overtook his bounty.

When Jinbe joined, Jinbe overtook Zoro and Sanji in terms of bounties.

Zoro's own bounty in the Wano plot is at 320 million Belly.

14. Master of Kenbunshoku and Busoshoku

For Busoshoku, Zoro is so skilled that he can surpass the Haki defenses of a figure like Pica. Apparently, not many people can surpass Zoro in terms of willpower.

Zoro's Kenbunshoku Haki is less highlighted, but he has it. He could anticipate sudden arrows and sense the presence of the enemy.

15. Deploy Haoshoku Haki against Kaido

When fighting Kaido in Onigashima, Zoro managed to carve a slash that Kaido thought would leave an imprint.

Kaido then wonders if Zoro uses Haoshoku Haki.

It is not yet known why Zoro's Haoshoku Haki only awakened at that time. Zoro himself is not aware he has Haoshoku Haki.
