Junkers Ju 87

The Junkers Ju 87 or Stuka (from Sturzkampfflugzeug, "dive bomber") was a German dive bomber and ground-attack aircraft. Designed by Hermann Pohlmann, it first flew in 1935. The Ju 87 made its combat debut in 1937 with the Luftwaffe Condor Legion during the Spanish Civil War and served Axis forces in World War II.

The aircraft was easily recognizable by its inverted gull wings and fixed spatted undercarriage. On the spearheads of the main gear, legs mounted the wailing siren Jericho-Trompete (Jericho's Trumpet), became a propaganda symbol of German air power and the victory of the 1939-1942 blitzkrieg. The Stuka design includes several innovative features, including an automatic pull dive brake under both wings to ensure that the aircraft recovers from a dive attack even if the pilot faints from high g-forces.

The Stuka operated with considerable success for close air support and anti-shipping at the outbreak of World War II. He spearheaded air strikes during the invasion of Poland in September 1939. The Stuka was important in the rapid conquest of Norway, the Netherlands, Belgium, and France in 1940. While robust, accurate, and highly effective against ground targets, the Stuka was vulnerable to contemporary combat aircraft, such as the dive bomber. others in war. During the Battle of Britain, the lack of maneuverability, wind speed, and defensive armament meant that heavy fighter escorts were required to operate effectively. After the Battle of Britain, Stuka operated with more success in the Balkans Campaign, African and Mediterranean theater, and the early stages of the Eastern Front where it was used for general ground support, effectively anti-tank aircraft, and anti-shipping roles. After the Luftwaffe lost air superiority, the Stuka became an easy target for enemy fighters on all fronts. Produced until 1944 due to lack of a better replacement. By the end of the war, the ground-attack version of the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 had replaced the Stuka, but the Stuka remained in service until the end of the war.

An estimated 6,500 Ju 87s of all versions were made between 1936 and August 1944.

Several famous aviators flew the Ju 87. Oberst Hans-Ulrich Rudel was the most successful Stuka ace and soldier to grace Germany in the Second World War.
