Toyota managed to close the 2018 World Rally Championship (WRC) season by coming out as champion in the manufacturing standings. Toyota's first championship title since 1999 was marked by a victory in the 2018 WRC Australia series.
Finnish racer Jari-Matti Latvala successfully brought the Toyota Yaris to be the fastest in Australia, ahead of the rally drivers who fought for the title in this last series. Latvala won in Australia ahead of Hayden Paddon (Hyundai) and Mads Ostberg (Citroen).
With a total collection of 368 points, the Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT (World Rally Team) has managed to lock the manufacturing title since its return to the WRC last year. This world title is supported by Toyota's five wins from 13 WRC series held this year, namely in Argentina, Sardinia, Finland, Germany, Turkey, and Australia.
The championship title is also a combination of the achievements of Toyota's three rally drivers in the standings, with Ott Tanak in third with 181 points, Latvala fourth with 128 points, and Esapekka Lappi fifth with 126 points. Unfortunately, the less fortunate Tanak failed to complete Toyota's achievements by winning the rally world title.
Defending champion Sebastien Ogier won his sixth title, finishing fifth in Australia. Two other title challengers, Thierry Neuville (Hyundai) and Tanak (Toyota) were forced to not be able to fight to the finish, due to technical problems experienced by each car throughout the weekend that forced them to stop.
Of Toyota's five victories this season, four of them were won by Tanak who also led him as a strong challenger for the championship title.
Toyota's title is the first since returning to the factory in the WRC, and the fourth time after winning in 1993, 1994, and 1999.
