The Messerschmitt Me 163 Komet is a German rocket-powered interceptor aircraft. Designed by Alexander Lippisch, it was the only rocket-powered fighter aircraft ever in service and the first manned aircraft of any type to exceed 1000 km/h (620 mph) at flight level.

The design is revolutionary and with never-before-seen performance. German test pilot Heini Dittmar piloted it in early July 1944, reaching a speed of 1130 km/h (700 mph), setting an unofficial flight speed record unmatched by any other turbojet powered aircraft for nearly a decade.

More than 300 aircraft were built. However, the Comet was ineffective in its role as an interceptor and was responsible for the destruction of only about nine to eighteen Allied aircraft for a whopping ten German aircraft. Apart from combat losses, many pilots were killed during the testing and training of this aircraft. (Wikipedia)
