Horizon Forbidden West proves the game is a new medium for epic works. I play a game that will be released on Friday, February 18, 2022, this is two weeks early through the code review sent by Playstation Asia. After spending 40 hours playing in Horizon Zero Dawn in 2017, we are invited to explore the heroic story of Aloy, the main character, for another 40 hours in this sequel.
The Horizon Saga is set in the United States at the beginning of the XXXI century. Civilizations were wiped out by robots--similar to the Terminator movie image. Initially, the robots were made for civilian purposes, such as cultivating rice fields, by scientist Elisabet Sobeck around 2040. However, these were later turned into war interests by her colleague, Ted Faro.
System errors made the war robots no longer willing to take orders, act autonomously, and were able to live from nature such as eating plants, meat, and the wreckage of other robots. They also breed automatically through factories scattered in various parts of the world. The war between humans and robots broke out in 2064 and ended with the destruction of most of the Earth's inhabitants. Our planet is ruled by robots with various animal forms. There are deer, crocodiles, tigers, and others. Some resemble dinosaurs.
Before civilization was wiped out, Sobeck and Faro created the Zero Dawn project. This is an attempt to save science through the most advanced artificial intelligence called Gaia. The few remaining humans survive in small tribes and rebuild civilization from scratch, hunting, and gathering.
Nearly a thousand years after the war, humans, and robots coexist. However, in 3020, a disturbance occurred which enabled the destructive system in Gaia, called Hades, to activate. As a result, the entire robot became vicious. Every time they see humans, they automatically attack. Horizon Zero Dawn concludes with the victory of Aloy, Elisabet Sobeck's clone, over the group that rode Hades in 2040.
Horizon Forbidden West begins approximately six months after the end of Zero Dawn. The Aloy now is not the old one. The 20-year-old woman is no longer just an outcast, now, she is a living legend. People in various cities and villages call him idols.
As depicted in the post-credits Horizon Zero Dawn, Hades isn't dead. The destroyer program crossed into the Far West--the western United States today. As a result, plants die and release toxins and the weather becomes erratic. While chasing Hades, Aloy can't help but deal with the Tenakh, the tribe that rules the west. As in the first series, he was again trapped in the political affairs of the tribe that faced the rebellion.
However, by director Mathijs de Jonge and screenwriter Benjamin McCaw, political affairs in Horizon are made interesting. We, for example, are invited to play Aloy as a diplomat to convince the embattled allies to join forces to face the rebels.
The foresight of De Jonge cs made mission after mission the strength of Horizon Forbidden West. During the 40 hours I played this game made by the Dutch production house, Guerilla, I didn't feel bored in the slightest. We are addicted to exploring every corner of the map; hunting giant robots with arrows, spears, and mines; and increasing Aloy's abilities, both from the skill tree and hunting equipment.
Horizon Forbidden West was released simultaneously globally today, Friday, February 18, 2022. This game made by Guerilla from the Netherlands has become Sony's mainstay for its new console, the Playstation 5, although it can also be played on the Playstation 4.

Like the first series, Horizon Zero Dawn, this game has a unique way of playing or gameplay. Aloy, the character, is required to navigate a world filled with large, fierce robot beasts. Indeed, he had a spear as his main weapon. However, fighting with just a spear was tantamount to seeking death. Because even the weakest enemy can kill him with just two or three attacks, Aloy's repeated slashes of the spear do not reduce their health points by half.
So, we are again required to maximize the use of various gadgets in Horizon Forbidden West. Aloy is provided--later able to purchase a more powerful version--a set of hunting equipment. From arrows, mines, bombs thrown from catapults, and so on. One enemy can fall with just one weapon, but some need to spend all of Aloy's weapon supplies.
Armed with a review code from Playstation Asia, I played this game two weeks before it was released. Here are some tips that can help you survive in the world of the Forbidden West.
1. Know the enemy
Horizon Forbidden West follows the teachings of Sun Tzu, "If you know your enemy and yourself, you can win hundreds of battles." Especially if the opponent is a giant iron robot with tank weaponry and capable of maneuvering as agile as a leopard.
So, before starting the battle, Aloy needs to know the contents of each enemy's stomach. Thanks to Focus, a kind of computer attached to his right ear, he can scan enemies. Each robot has unique elements that become its strengths and weaknesses. Some have fire attacks, but are weak when exposed to the ice element, and so on.
Minimize the effect of enemy attacks by choosing armor that has the same element as our target. Instead, choose a gadget that has the same elements as the enemy's weakness. Don't forget to mark or tag the target so that we can always know its position when fighting. In short, often press the R3 button to activate Focus.
2. Make sure all elements are in the stockpile.
The further in the game, the more decisive the elements in the battle. So, don't rush to sell your old weapon just because the hit rate is lower than the new weapon. Oftentimes, a small hit rate with a suitable element is more effective in winning battles than a new weapon with more power.
3. Always be on the lookout for arrows without elements
Although elements are very decisive in battle, it doesn't mean we forget about non-elemental weapons. Standard bows and arrows need to always be available for emergencies, given the limited resources for compounding elemental weapons.
4. Fight enemies by stealth or from a distance.
I was tempted by a promotion from Sony which describes Aloy's shrewdness in conquering enemies from close range. As a result, dead. Aloy is not Kratos in God of War who is good at one-on-one battles, let alone one-on-five. To maximize the function of the tall grass in the Forbidden West that protects Aloy from enemy sight, then attack them from behind. Then, walk away, lay a mine, and finish it off with arrows.
5. Take all resources
This principle is following the civilization of the Horizon Forbidden West, namely hunting and gathering. So, Aloy needs to pick up or loot all the resources that are in front of his eyes. Especially medicinal plants. There is no need to worry about excess capacity because all the materials collected after the Aloy bag is full are automatically stored away. We can pick them up in the supply chests scattered at many checkpoints throughout the Forbidden West.
6. Be patient in the first two hours
Based on my experience, Horizon Forbidden West promises a fun game of up to more than 40 hours. However, this game opens with a slow flow. About two hours early, we are crammed with piles of documents that tell the events in the first series, Horizon Zero Dawn. Guerilla seems to want new players to know the background of the Forbidden West, as well as refresh the memories of players who played Zero Dawn five years ago. So, given that this game has a long and strong storyline, make an effort to read those documents.
7. Maximize the function of the javelin
In Horizon Forbidden West, Aloy has a new weapon, namely the javelin. Unlike the spear used for close combat, the javelin was thrust at the enemy from afar. This weapon is much, much more powerful than the others in the game. Combined with elemental weapons, you will be greatly helped in the fight against strong enemies. For example, making their armor corrosive through acid attack repeatedly, then rained down with a javelin. The only weakness of the javelin is the direction of the parabolic throw so that the aim is not as easy as an arrow.
