Welcome to Japari Park
Welcome to Japari Park, a giant safari island where visitors can find a wide variety of animals — or Friends — in an area designed to resemble a native animal ecosystem. Starting from the savanna, snow mountains to the desert are present in Japari Park. Here you will find Friends in their natural habitat. For example, you can find the Serval cat in the savanna, the Red Fox in the cold, the prairie dog and the beaver in the woodlands, and other Friends. They are the proud collection of Japari Park.
You may be asking what exactly “Friends” is. Friends are animals that have the form of human girls created thanks to a magical material called Sandstar. Even though they are in human form, they are still wild animals, have character, and have bodily strength like wild animals. But there's no need to be afraid, they can communicate like humans and won't eat humans.
As a zoo, Japari Park has similarities with Jurrasic Park. The two safari parks are located in remote areas and are both abandoned. But if Jurrasic Park was deliberately abandoned, in Japari Park humans suddenly disappeared and at the same time, a strange creature named Cerulean appeared. As a result, a state-of-the-art safari park turns into a wild area, leaving only Friends and Ceruleans.
Kaban, a child who is alone in Kara, goes in search of himself
The story begins when a mysterious 'animal' carrying a bag appears in the middle of the savanna. The animal was found by the Serval cat. They both did not know what 'animal' the carrier of the Bag was. So, Serval decided to name it Kaban-chan (bag in Japanese) because this 'animal' carries a bag. The sughooi~ and tanoshii~ safari journey begins to find out what animal Kaban-chan is.
The story becomes interesting because Kaban-chan is a Human and not a friend. However, the Friends didn't notice, wondering what kind of Friends Kaban-chan was. Compared to other Friends, Kaban has no special characteristics. He couldn't climb a tree like the Serval. Its strength is small compared to the African Elephant. It doesn't even turn out that it can't fly like an Ibis bird. Kaban-chan's weakness turns out to have its charm. Interesting because for the audience, Kaban-chan as a human is depicted. But Kaban-chan himself didn't know that. Not to mention the absence of an explanation as to why Kaban-chan could be in Japari Park.
Educational and Fun
Watching Kemono Friends seems to invite us to watch a documentary. The feel of a film that usually airs on Nat Geo Wild television, BBC Nature, or Animal Planet is very much felt in Kemono Friends. The designs (read: clothes) of the Friends in this series are indeed designed to resemble the real animals, as well as their behavior. Putting aside that they are intelligent and can communicate with human language, the behavior of the friends is the same as that of real animals in real life.
For example Toki the Nipponia Nippon (Japanese Crested Ibis). Toki's design is quite close to the original species. The white color with a red Nipponia Nippon bandage is depicted in Toki's character. In real life, a Nipponia Nippon has a loud call like a crow. In the anime, Toki has a loud and very ugly voice.
Other examples are the Black-tailed Prairie Dog and the Otter. These two friends have the same behavior as the original in the wild. The black-tailed prairie dog has the characteristics of digging holes and the beaver likes to build dams in the wild. While in the wild a beaver can build a dam, the Friends version can build a house thanks to the help of Prairie Dog and Kaban-chan.
In each episode, there is an informative interlude explaining the characteristics of the original animals from Friends that appear in each episode. The explanation section is filled with real animal experts from various zoos. Not only zoos in Japan, but several international zoos also contributed to commenting on this segment. Friends' sleeping position was made similar to the original animal.
I think Kemono Friends was originally designed to attract children's interest. Although the narrative appeals to young children, this series has its charm for adults. While children are attracted by the cute character designs, and comedic stories full of educational elements, adult audiences will focus on the fact that Kemono Friends is a post-apocalypse series and the mysteries spread across Kemono Friends. Interestingly, even though this anime is set in a post-apocalypse setting, the story atmosphere of this anime is very cheerful and full of fun. The advantage of Kemono Friends, which is character-driven storytelling, is the excellent storytelling combined with impressive world-building.
What do a budget and a good picture mean?
In terms of production, I see Yaoyaruzu, the animation studio of Kemono Friends, already lost before the war. Nexon as the original IP holder suddenly withdrew from the original transmedia project. Yaoyaruzu was abandoned by its main investors, but the show must go on and must be completed.
Based on a tweet from CanipaShow, the animation of Kemono Friends was produced by 10 people for 500 days using Full CG 3D. The efforts of these 10 animators in my opinion deserve thumbs up. The background images of Kemono Friends are pleasant to look at, but the character's 3D CG visuals are a bit depressing. Often the slick 2D backgrounds don't seem to blend in with the 3D characters. Several anime fans who live in the SAO and ReZero generations, especially those who uphold budget, budget, budget, and image quality as gods, will go back and forth after being treated to sad visuals like this.
In terms of voice actors, Kemono Friends, thankfully, there are very few voice actors who have to fill in some characters, even though most of them contain names that I just heard. The two seiyuu I know in the Kemono Friends voice cast are Aya Uchida and Ai Nonaka.
The opening song "Welcome to Youkouso Japari Park" performed by Doubiscuits and PPP is very catchy and fun to listen to, disguising the post-apocalypse feel of this anime series. The opening song for Kemono Friends was in second place on iTunes Japan as the most downloaded anime song. Mewhan's ending song "Boku no Friend" makes us remember the original form of this series.
Countering the Typical Anime Success Stereotype
Kemono Friends is a series that comes with WWE wrestler Randy Orton and his signature move, RKO. OUT OF NOWHERE. A series that did not have grandiose targets but suddenly became one of the most hit anime of the Winter 2017 season. The struggles of 10 Yaoyaruzu animators yielded very sweet results.
Because of this anime, there is a lot of news from zoos all over Japan that there is an increase in visitors when this anime airs. Otaku who usually sit at home suddenly flock to the zoo after watching Kemono Friends. The Shiritori Zoo in Kanagawa Prefecture suddenly got an explosion of visitors when netizens found out that they could play with Serval cats at the zoo.
If you can tolerate the depressing visuals, Kemono Friends will deliver a very pleasant experience. In addition, this anime can also be used as an alternative to watching together if you have to watch it with children. You can focus on the mysteries of Kaban-chan and Japari Park and children can enjoy the humor of Serval and other Friends and the educational elements of animals that are also interesting dishes for all.
