5 Unique Facts about Sonic the Hedgehog, the Legendary Blue Hedgehog
No less iconic than Link and Mario
All gamers know about Sonic the Hedgehog, the Blue Hedgehog who can move very fast. Yep, in the world of digital games, this iconic character has become a legendary franchise belonging to Sega and several developers under its auspices.
Well, there are some unique facts regarding the Blue Hedgehog. Are you curious too? Let's look at the following unique facts.
1. There is no Mario, so there is no Sonic.
As reported by Polygon, the existence of the legendary Sonic cannot be separated from the presence of Mario in the Mario Bros. game. Nintendo's legendary game seems to have attracted Sega to the iconic character that could boost console sales. So, in 1990, Sega together with Naoto Oshima, Yuji Naka, and Hirokazu Yasuhara began designing a character for the long term.
Well, the result is a blue hedgehog character named Sonic or Sonic the Hedgehog. Sega at that time was considered successful in producing an iconic figure who was able to rival the dominance of Mario and Link as Nintendo's characters. The hedgehog was chosen because he was able to roll around and hide behind his sharp spines.
2. Sonic was once depicted as a rabbit
A unique thing happened when Sega and his friends had not yet decided on Sonic as a blue hedgehog. At first, the rabbit was chosen as Sega's mascot because it was considered funny and easy to remember. His name is still imagined as Sonic the Rabbit and not Sonic the Hedgehog.
However, with input from many parties, Sega finally decided to choose a hedgehog as the main mascot of Sonic. After all, there are already several big companies that make the rabbit figure their mascot. Well, in this case, it seems that Sega is reluctant to deal with copyright issues in the future.
3. Become one of the famous characters in the game world
Today, many people know about Sonic the Hedgehog. The story of Sonic has also been appointed to the big screen by Hollywood. The most iconic thing about Sonic is his movements in collecting gold rings. It can even destroy enemies with deadly spiked scrolls.
However, it is not only Sonic who is famous. In the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, several other characters are no less famous. They are Miles 'Tails' Prower, Knuckles, Amy Rose, Metal Sonic, Shadow the Hedgehog, and the main antagonist named Dr. Eggman.
4. There were variations of Sonic before the advent of the Sega Genesis console.
Maybe many people only know about Sonic from the 16-bit Sega Genesis console or Mega Drive. But, before that, this character has started to appear in some fairly simple games. Well, in the 1990s Sega also had a console with 8-bit quality that was released in the mid-1980s.
Yep, the console was called the Sega Master System which was created to compete with the Nintendo (NES) console. In the 8-bit version, Sonic only has a few gold rings to collect. The graphics displayed in the old Sonic game are also very simple and have not reached the quality of the Sega Genesis version of Sonic the Hedgehog.
5. Sonic may not be able to swim
In its history, maybe Sonic can be included as a character who can't swim or rather doesn't like water. Video Gamer on its website notes that in an interview with Yuji Naka--one of the creators of Sonic's character--it was said that Sonic the Hedgehog was assumed to be unable to swim.
Initially, Naka assumed that the hedgehog in the original world couldn't swim. However, his prediction was wrong because the hedgehog was able to swim in the water. So, until now, Sonic's character is also assumed to be unable to swim even though, in some of his games, he has missions in the water.
