Ultraman is a tokusatsu series produced by Tsuburaya Productions featuring a superhero named Ultraman. It is the second installment in the Ultra Series after the tokusatsu Ultra Q series but is the first to feature Ultraman. Consisting of 39 episodes in total, the series first aired on the Japanese television network TBS from 17 July 1966 to 9 April 1967. Ultraman was created by Eiji Tsuburaya of Tsuburaya Productions, a special effects pioneer.
Ultraman comes from Nebula M78. He is a lecturer at Space University and a member of the Space Garrison. It is also said that he had a life there. His father is the director of the Space Security Board and his mother is a teacher at Ultra school. He came to earth for a reason. He was chasing a monster called Bemular. However, Ultraman collided with a battleship from the Space Patrol named SSIT that came from the earth.
The pilot named Shin Hayata was almost killed in that incident. Feeling guilty, it was at this critical moment that Ultraman decided to share his energy with Hayata to keep Hayata alive. Ultraman became one with Hayata so Ultraman had to stay on earth. Ultraman's desire to stay on earth got permission from Zoffy, the commander of the Space Garrison. That's when, whenever a monster attacks the earth, Hayata always turns into Ultraman. His transformation into Ultraman is assisted by a tool called the Beta Capsule which is always kept in the left pocket of his patrol shirt.
Ultraman is very strong and has many moves. But like most other superheroes who have weaknesses (Superman is weak to kryptonite), Ultraman is weak to Earth's atmosphere. Earth's atmosphere reduces the sun's energy, which is the source of its power and is not as free as it is in space. Earth's air structure is also different from its home planet.
For this reason, Ultraman can only fight in his giant form for only 3 minutes. In his struggle to protect the earth, Ultraman was finally defeated by an extraterrestrial named Zetton. Zetton absorbed Ultraman's attacks and turned them into fireballs to attack Ultraman. The fireball fired by Zetton destroys the color timer on Ultraman's chest.
Even though Zetton was finally defeated by the SSIT team, it seems that Ultraman can't be helped anymore. Suddenly, Zoffy appears to help. Zoffy explained to Ultraman that to repair the broken color timer, Ultraman had to undergo treatment on his home planet. Ultraman initially refused because if he parted with Hayata, Hayata would die.
In the end, Zoffy separated Ultraman from Hayata, and gave Hayata enough strength to survive for a while until Ultraman returned to earth. The series ends without it being known whether Hayata will reunite with Ultraman or not.
