Caterpie, known as the "worm" Pokémon, was designed by Ken Sugimori. Satoshi Tajiri, the series' creator, drew heavily on his childhood hobby of insect collection when designing the various Pokémon species. Caterpie is based on the design of a caterpillar, specifically the Swallowtail Butterfly caterpillar. The term "electronic commerce" refers to the sale of electronic goods.

The caterpie has green skin with yellow dots, a yellow tummy, and a noticeable red osmeterium on its forehead. Their green bodies help them blend in with the surrounding vegetation, their eyes are designed to scare off predators, their legs enable them to climb any surface, and the osmeterium on the top of their heads may exude a foul odor to frighten away potential predators.

The smallest of the original Pokémon, the caterpie, expands in size by losing its skin. Caterpie eventually changed into Metapod and ultimately Butterfree. Tackle and String Shot are the only two attacks it can ever learn, and until it evolves, it has very few skills. However, it was able to learn Snore and Bug Bite in all games that came after Pokémon Platinum.
