We may know Sailor Mars or Rei Hino as an emotional girl who competes with Sailor Moon for the attention of the Masked Tuxedo. Here are five facts about Sailor Mars or Rei Hino.

1. Compared to the manga version, the anime version of Sailor Mars is completely different

Many fans of the original manga were surprised by how different Sailor Mars behaved in the anime version. In the manga, Rei is a conservative, cool, disciplined, and rational figure. He is focused on his goals and doesn't like getting caught up in silly things.

In the anime version, Rei is a hard worker who is very disciplined, but his personality is fierier and he is always caught in small fights with Sailor Moon. Initially, there is a love triangle between him, Usagi Tsukino (Sailor Moon), and Mamoru Chiba (Tuxedo Mask).

2. Sailor Mars hates all things romantic and boys

In the anime, Rei competed with Usagi for the affection of the Masked Tuxedo throughout the first season. In the following season, she has a crush on her grandfather's student, Yūichirō Kumada. However, in the manga version, he is a man-hating figure, mainly due to his bad relationship with his father and past trauma.

Therefore, he is not interested in pursuing any kind of romance. She considers men emotionally weak and untrustworthy.

3. Rei's character as a Miko is the personal experience of Sailor Moon creator Naoko Takeuchi

Rei is a Miko, who is a Shinto shrine maiden. In modern times, Miko is trained to perform sacred shrine cleanings, perform the sacred Kagura dance, and help maintain shrines, with tasks such as cleaning and receiving shrine congregations.

Miko was allowed to integrate into modern society, but Rei didn't care for that. He is not involved in the frivolous activities of modern society in general. Naoko Takeuchi, the creator of Sailor Moon, created the character Rei based on real-life experiences as a Miko.

Sailor Mars' uniform is red and white, representing the colors of the priestess Miko's robes. Miko is also known for its archery skills. This may have been the inspiration for one of Sailor Mars' famous attacks: Fire Shooter.

4. Unlike other sailors who wear boots, Sailor Mars wears heels

Most sailor soldiers wore knee-length boots, which provided extra protection, or ankle boots. However, Sailor Mars chose to fight crime in red high heels, with no straps or extra protection.

5. The power of fire comes from the Japanese planet Mars

Although the anime version uses Roman mythological names and astronomical symbols dating from ancient Greece to represent the planets, many of the sailors' powers are also influenced by the Japanese names of the planets.

Mars is the Roman god of war, which is perfect for passionate warriors, but Mars isn't associated with fire, so why is it his main strength? This is because the Japanese word for Mars is Kasei (火星), which translates to "planet or fire star."
