5 Facts about Sailor Moon that you may not know

Loved all over the world, Sailor Moon continues to evolve. Of all the extraordinary characters in the Sailor Moon anime, one character that almost all Sailor Moon viewers like the most: Usagi Tsukino.

Known as "Serena" in the English version (even though she's almost named "Celeste"), there are many reasons why everyone likes Usagi so much. Kind, caring, stubborn, but also a little goofy and childish, Usagi is the best friend ever. Here are five facts about Usagi Tsukino aka Sailor Moon that you may not have known.

1. She is already 1000 years old

Usagi is a bit childish. This is one of the character's inherent traits, Usagi's childish nature that sometimes frustrates other characters. And her childish nature still sticks with her even though she is a thousand years old.

Technically, Usagi is already around 1,000 years old, as revealed in the second season. There's a theory that Usagi, and most of Earth, was in some sort of cryogenic deep sleep for years, which is why Usagi doesn't look very old, but she's technically around 1,000 years old.

2. Usagi is a super-rich kid

If you follow the anime series, you will realize that Usagi and the other sailors come from a fairly wealthy class. Every one of the five main characters lives in the Juuban district of Tokyo, which is a very prosperous area.

Real estate in Japan is also very expensive, so the fact that sailors can afford houses in this district shows how wealthy they are. Usagi is very rich, as she has a two-story house, a luxury only the rich can afford.

3. The meaning of the name Sailor Moon, Usagi Tsukino

Understanding the meaning behind Usagi's name is a bit difficult unless you understand Japanese.

In Japanese, "Usagi" means "rabbit." "Tsuki," meanwhile, means "moon." So, when paired together, the name Sailor Moon roughly translates to "rabbit on the moon." Usagi is often seen wearing rabbits in her clothes (like in her pajamas) or just having bunny-themed items, like bedsheets.

Unlike rabbits, however, Usagi hates carrots. Also, the meaning of the rabbit's name might explain why Usagi has a two-tailed hairstyle, like long bunny ears.

4. Usagi is never really stupid, she's just lazy

Usagi was never really portrayed as a smart character. Not only does she hate all school activities, but Usagi never seems to do well in her classes, especially English and math--her worst subjects.

5. Sailor Moon is almost made in North America

Sailor Moon does get many adaptations to various countries, including North America. Of course, the North American version may have changed things up (like Usagi being named “Serena”) and censored some elements that were more “inappropriate for children” (at least by western standards) but the narrative core of the show remains largely intact.

Before the rights to convert Sailor Moon into English for Sailor Moon came out, a company by the name of Toon Makers almost decided to make their version of Sailor Moon.
