Sailor Moon: 5 Facts About Sailor Uranus You Didn't Know

Haruka Tenou is the incarnation of Sailor Uranus. This character was created by Naoko Takeuchi in the comic and anime series titled Sailor Moon. At the beginning of its appearance, Haruka is described as a character who is selfish, stubborn, but also funny.

Apart from his close relationship with Michiru Kaioh aka Sailor Neptune, maybe there are some facts about Sailor Uranus that you need to know, what are they?

1. Her gender identity has long been the talk of Sailor Moon anime lovers

There are some inconsistencies between the Sailor Moon manga and the anime. In the manga, it is made clear that Haruka is gender fluid or non-binary.

In the original anime series, Haruka says that she is a woman and it is made clear that only women can become sailor warriors. In Sailor Moon Crystal, Michiru tells Usagi that Haruka is a man and a woman. However, series creator Naoko Takeuchi said that Haruka "has always been and will always be a girl".

Sailor Uranus was born female and identifies as such, but has masculine traits that make her essentially gender fluid. As Sailor Neptune explained, she has skills like both men and women. The creator of Sailor Moon, Naoko Takeuchi, even stated that she has a heart like a man.

This inconsistency has driven fans crazy, but really -- who cares? Her character is not completely binary, straight, or attracted to stereotypical gender roles, making her an excellent character for queer youngsters to watch.

2. Haruka is the highest sailor of all sailor warriors

Her appearance is shown as a teenage girl growing up with short blonde hair and dark blue eyes. She is the second tallest sailor warrior, as he stands about 180 cm tall. She sometimes wears feminine clothes though mostly masculine. When she put on masculine clothes, his appearance immediately changed drastically to look like a boy.

With that height, it's not surprising that at first many thought Haruka was a man.

3. The source of his strength

Sailor Uranus has quite an interesting power that is very different from other members of the sailor warrior. Haruka has powers of precognition, excels in close combat (she wields a sword called the Space Sword), and psychokinesis.

However, in the anime Sailor, Moon Crystal clearly states, Haruka has multi-gender powers, meaning she has both male and female powers combined. This makes Sailor Uranus quite physically strong.

The planet Haruka is Uranus, a Roman planet and god usually associated with the sky, disasters, and earthquakes. This makes sense when looking at Haruka's strength and stubborn personality.

Hers main attacks are "World Shaking", "Space Sword Blaster", and "Space Turbulence".

4. Several times Sailor Uranus has clearly shown his interest in Sailor Moon (Usagi)

This fact is pretty hard to miss in the Japanese version of the original series, and even harder to miss in Sailor Moon Crystal. Haruka is a cool woman and in some episodes, Haruka blatantly makes affectionate gestures to Usagi.

5. The meaning of the name Sailor Uranus, Haruka Tenou

Like all sailor warriors, Haruka Tenou's name was created with her sailor identity. Naoko Takeuchi named each sailor after the name of the planet they each carried.

In Sailor Uranus, her surname has two of the kanji present in the planet's Japanese name. "Ten" translates to "sky" and "ō" to "king." In Japanese, the word for Uranus is literally "star king of the sky" in "ten'ōsei."

On the other hand, "Haruka" translates to "far away," which could be a reference to the idea of Uranus as a sky god far from earth. As we know, the planet Uranus is one of the farthest planets from Earth.
