Of all the sailors in the Sailor Moon anime series, Sailor Neptune is one of the most mysterious. Introduced alongside Sailor Uranus, Saturn, and Pluto at the end of the series, Sailor Neptune aka Michiru Kaioh is a symbol of grace, but he can also tear his foes to pieces as easily as she sighs.

Her love of art and power made Sailor Neptune steal the hearts of Sailor Moon anime lovers around the world. Here are five facts you may not have realized about Sailor Neptune, what are they?

1. About her hairstyle which is quite significant and striking

In the magical girl's anime genre, technicolor hair is a must. While many characters have natural hair colors, some characters can have lighter hair colors and stand out more than others. This includes Sailor Neptune's special aquamarine hair.

Michiru doesn't have straight hair like most sailors. Her hair looks wavy and voluminous.

2. Are Sailor Neptune and Sailor Uranus cousins?

This is a question that comes up repeatedly and is most frequently discussed by Sailor Moon anime lovers. In the 90s English dubbed anime version, all same-sex couples are omitted, regardless of their existence as a couple in the Japanese anime and manga versions.

Michiru and Haruka were never really cousins. The producers of the '90s British version were simply afraid to bring two female characters into a romantic relationship. The modern Sailor Moon Crystal has even made it clear that Haruka is gender fluid and doesn't explicitly identify Sailor Uranus as female.

3. The meaning of the name Sailor Neptune, Michiru Kaioh

Her surname Kaioh is part of the Japanese word for her planet, Neptune. In Japanese, Neptune is Kaiosei, which translates to "star king of the seas". Michiru's surname simply translates to "king of the sea".

Michiru, on the other hand, literally translates to "to be full" in Japanese. Some fans take this as a picture of the rising tide, but it's unclear if that's what it means.

4. What's so special about his water attack?

Like Sailor Mercury, Sailor Neptune's attacks are based in water. But there is one big difference, their water attacks come from different sources.

Sailor Mercury's water-based attacks are the result of him taking water from around his enemy. Her attacks are almost always based on water in the weather, such as fog, snow, or hail attacks. Sailor Neptune, on the other hand, does not rely on the water around her enemy. Instead, her attacks depended on the depths of the ocean.

5. If her name is Michiru, why do people call her Nerissa?

Sailor Neptune's human name is Michiru. The name also applies to the Japanese anime version and Sailor Moon Crystal. However, the English dub of the '90s changed her name to Michelle. Surprisingly, that's not his only name.

A series of Sailor Moon dolls was released before Sailor Neptune and Uranus made their debut in the English language of the anime. It seems the doll's manufacturer doesn't know the names of the characters in English yet. Instead of identifying Sailor Neptune as Michelle, they referred to her as Nerissa. That's a fair enough mistake because Nerissa is ancient Greek for "from the sea."
