Every warrior in the Sailor Moon anime is unique: the kind and brilliant Sailor Mercury, the crazy and aspirational Sailor Venus, and the whiny but brave and strong Sailor Moon. Each character is well developed and stands out from each other due to their respective backgrounds and combinations of traits they possess.

Hotaru Tomoe was a mystery when first introduced. But as the story progresses, the audience can learn a lot about her and her identity, namely Sailor Saturn. She is one of the darkest and most complex members of the team.

Here is a further explanation of Sailor Saturn.

1. The meaning of the name Hotaru Tomoe

Each soldier has a name that is relevant to their planet or their role as a warrior/sailor. Sailor Saturn's first name, Hotaru, means "firefly."

In Japanese culture, the tiny dots of light produced by fireflies are sometimes referred to as the spirits of warriors who died in battle. As a warrior closely connected with death (and a girl whose room is full of tiny lights), Hotaru is a fitting name for Sailor Saturn.

As for his last name, the two kanji used to spell "Tomoe" mean "earth" and "grow." Japanese culture associates each planet with an element, and Saturn with earth. In fact, the Japanese name for Saturn, "Dosei", is spelled using the same first character as "Tomoe," clearly linking Hotaru to her patron planet through her name.

2. Sailor Saturn has a uniform that is unique and different from other sailors

Sailor Saturn's first uniform was noticeably different from those worn by other sailors. Instead of just the standard variation, the outfit that Sailor Saturn wears has crystals in the brooch holder and embellishments on the gloves.

The most striking detail is the petal-like cut that replaces the sleeves and the ring-like loop that creates a dramatic and subtle look.

3. Sailor Saturn doesn't have a transformation sequence like other sailors

For most of the characters, changing form from an ordinary human to a soldier or sailor will get a beautiful spotlight and is very pleasing to the eye. All sailors got their share of beauty, except for Sailor Saturn.

4. Sailor Saturn is a princess, just like Sailor Moon

Sailor Moon wasn't the only character who was a princess in her previous life. As the princess of the Moon Kingdom, Princess Serenity seems to have a higher royal status, but all sailors are princesses from their respective planets. That means that Sailor Saturn is not only a warrior of destruction but also Princess Saturn.

In Naoko Takeuchi's manga and artwork, she is shown wearing a long purple dress with an unusual neckline and long opera gloves. And as a princess, she also owns a castle on Saturn which is Titan Castle which is named after the largest satellite on the planet.

5. Hotaru Tomoe is a cyborg

Hotaru was a healthy little girl before becoming a victim of a fire in Professor Tomoe's laboratory. Due to the injuries she sustained, her father had to make several changes to his body to help him survive.

Her father, Professor Tomoe replaced some of his body parts with robots in the manga and anime versions, making her a futuristic cyborg.
